How Karins announced his resignation

The Prime Minister of Latvia announced that on August 17 he will submit his resignation to the country’s President Edgars Rinkevics.

Karins called on the New Unity party, which is part of the ruling coalition, to nominate a new candidate for the post of head of government.

To develop, the state needs a strong and dynamic government that can make difficult decisions, – he said.

Karins refused to name a possible successor, noting that he will focus on supporting the candidate from his party, whom New Unity will agree on on August 16.

According to Latvian media, the government could be headed by Evika Silinia from New Unity, who currently holds the position of Minister of Welfare.

Last week, Latvian media reported that Karins proposed to coalition partners, the Joint List and the National Union, to change ministers and areas of responsibility in the government.

Otherwise, the prime minister promised to negotiate the creation of a new coalition with the “For Development/For!” party. and the Union of Greens and Peasants.

Later, the President of Latvia stated that the formation of a new government was impossible, since according to the Constitution, the change of the cabinet of ministers is initiated by the head of state.

The cause of the government crisis in Latvia was contradictions in the ruling coalition on fundamental issues related to budget formation, capital market development, labor shortages, education and health care.
