In dialogue with the Italian government to close agreements related to public security, the Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski, stated this Saturday (12) that there is currently an understanding that the fight against organized crime requires collaboration between countries.

“The fight against criminal organizations can no longer be done in isolation, country by country, but must be a collaborative fight between countries. And the excellent relationship we have with Italy has allowed us to make significant progress in this area”, he told the analyst at CNN Américo Martins, during the agenda of the II International Sphere Forum, in Rome.

“As the anti-mafia prosecutor (Giovani Melillo) said today, the aim is to no longer collaborate on specific cases, but to have permanent collaboration, especially with regard to the exchange of information, and information is crucial for combating criminal organizations, which operate globally, worldwide”, he added.

Last Thursday (10), Lewandowski met with Italy’s Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Attorney General, Giovanni Melillo, to talk about the need for police and judicial cooperation in combating organized crime.

Yesterday (11), the minister spoke about the announcement that the fight against drug trafficking and criminal organizations.

According to Lewandowski, three agreements are being negotiated and should be signed during the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November in Rio de Janeiro.

PEC of Security

The minister also commented on the drafting of the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that deals with public security in the country. According to Lewandowski, his expectation when thinking about a text that discusses the subject is to “spark debate”.

“There is a general feeling that after 36 years of the advent of our 1988 Constitution, it is necessary to change the treatment of combating crime, because of course the crime that was fundamentally local, today is a crime that operates nationally, so the treatment has to be different”, he began.

“I am not concerned with the approval of the PEC itself, with the details of the legal text that we prepared at the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, my concern is to spark debate. We need to ensure that the issue of public security is rethought and that chapter of the Constitution that deals with the topic, which begins with article 144, is revisited”, he added.

“So, if the PEC is approved today or tomorrow, it doesn’t matter, what matters is that we re-discuss the issue, not only the Brazilian State — especially the Parliament — but also civil society, which has to have a say in what it says I respect this issue.”

In June, the , but the final text has not yet been sent to the National Congress.
