Lithuania began building a fence on the border with Belarus

0views

On Friday, July 9, construction of a fence on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border begins.

Lithuania views the creation of a physical barrier as a way to protect against the influx of illegal migrants.

As the Baltic country notes, it is from Belarus that a large number of people illegally cross the border enter the territory of the European Union.

The planned start of construction of the physical barrier was announced by Giedrius Misutis, a representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.

The military should begin installing the fence today – quotes the words of a department employee.

Misutis noted that Lithuanian border guards are not involved in creating a fence: they only identify the most dangerous border areas where the wall should appear first.

It is planned that at the initial stage a 30-kilometer barrier will be built, which will be a wire fence.

The situation on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border

Lithuania has recently experienced an influx of migrants. As Lithuanian border guards note, more than 1.5 thousand people illegally crossed the border with Belarus in 2021.

If we compare it with last year’s figure, the number of “illegals” is already 18.5 times higher.

In connection with what is happening, the Lithuanian government declared a state of emergency.
