Loterj appeals to the STF against government action that calls for the overthrow of bets nationwide | Blogs

The Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj) appealed, this Sunday (13), to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) against Loterj’s action throughout the country.

The government action was filed on Friday (11). The request states that the activities outside Rio de Janeiro, therefore nationwide, of betting houses authorized by the Ministry of Finance disobey rules and invade the Union’s jurisdiction.

Contrary to the AGU’s understanding, the court stated that any suspension of bookmakers violates the principle of legal certainty and could result in million-dollar compensation, in addition to a significant loss of revenue.

While the government claims that the lottery’s rules against betting crimes are lax, Loterj argues that it has “implemented a robust anti-money laundering system, including rigorous customer identification, transaction monitoring and reporting of suspicious activities”.

Loterj also claims that all operators accredited by it pay federal taxes, which would constitute the “only effective source of revenue for the Union in the sports betting sector” currently.

It will also be up to the STF to decide whether the Union or the States have jurisdiction to operate and regulate lottery services.
