“Lula did not create a climate in the center and is chasing the losses,” says the environmentalist; Gleisi Hoffmann responds and blames “financial system” | Blogs
At the moment when President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) articulates a reaction to the fires with the leaders of the National Congress and prepares the speech at the UN General Assembly, environmentalists heard by the CNN criticize the federal government’s action in relation to the environment.
“Lula is not a denialist, but he did not put the climate issue at the center of his agenda and is now chasing the losses,” said Luís Fernando Guedes, executive director of the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation, to CNN.
According to the environmentalist, among the complaints are the “small” budget of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change; and the delay in creating the Climate Authority.
Director of the National Association of Municipalities and the Environment, Mário Mantovani agrees with the criticism.
“The environment and culture are the departments that have the least money in this and all governments. The Climate Authority is urgent and necessary,” she said.
In an interview with CNN this Wednesday (18), the president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, as an obstacle to facing the crisis.
“When you want to increase resources for public areas, they say it’s a spending government,” he said.
“Doing environmental prevention is wasteful, yes. Yes, it costs money to combat natural disasters”, added the PT member.
“There is this business of imposing on the government, imposing on the Executive, even by Congress, the financial system, the media, that we have to save money and we have situations like these”, said Gleisi.
Given the arguments, the federal deputy celebrated the decision of Minister Flávio Dino, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), to authorize the opening of extraordinary credits to combat fires and burning in the Amazon and Pantanal.
“Now, thank God, Minister Flávio Dino has decided that he can spend whatever is necessary to fight the fire.”
