Lula wants Mexico back in the “troika” over Venezuela | Blogs

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) wants Mexico back in discussions on a solution to the worsening political crisis in Venezuela.

Lula is in the Mexican capital and is scheduled to meet with the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, this Monday (30) evening, hours before the presidential election.

The PT member also intends to talk to the current president of the country, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

There is still no planned conversation with the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro. The two were scheduled to meet in New York, during the UN General Assembly, but the meeting ended up being canceled on the grounds that their agendas did not coincide.

After the controversial election in Venezuela, Lula, Obrador and Petro formed a “troika” to mediate the political impasse between Nicolas Maduro and the opposition, which claims to have won the election and presented voting records to prove the argument.

Until then, the three countries insisted on the publication of electoral records, which was rejected by the country’s Supreme Court.

Subsequently, Obrador left mediation after signals from the president-elect that the matter should be handled internally by Venezuela, with the help of international organizations.

Brazilian diplomacy hopes that these conversations will guide Brazil’s new position on the conflict and insists that there be mediation through dialogue between opposition and government representatives.

At Itamaraty, the assessment is that it is more difficult to get involved in the crisis after Maduro’s main opponent left the country. Edmundo Gonzalez is in asylum in Spain.
