LZD will lay off almost 300 employees by the end of this year

About 300 employees of the Lithuanian Railways company may be laid off by the end of this year.

According to foreign media, the unpopular decision may be associated with the termination of the agreement on the transit of Belarusian potash to the port of Klaipeda, which Lithuania did unilaterally.

The Lithuanian government has obliged the management of LZD to stop the transit of Belaruskali cargo from February 1, reports.

After a joint exchange of notifications, it became known that the Belarusian side intends to seek compensation for damages associated with the Vilnius decision.

LZD signed a contract for the transportation of goods with Belaruskali in 2018.

Its term expired in 2023 and provided for the annual transportation of goods of the Belarusian enterprise in the amount of 11 million tons.

Against this background, it became known that the company’s management plans to fire up to 300 specialists.

Some of them may be offered vacancies in other departments of the company.

LZD is the largest employer and currently employs about 8 thousand people.

The trade union joined the discussion of the issue.
