French President Emmanuel Macron was not invited to the BRICS summit in South Africa, despite his request.

According to the portal, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, as chairman of BRICS, sent out invitations to the summit to the leaders of 70 states.

The leaders of Western countries – the USA, Great Britain, France – were not invited to the summit.

On Wednesday, the office of the President of South Africa reported that the leaders of Brazil, India, China and South Africa will attend the BRICS summit, which will be held in person on August 22-24 in Johannesburg. Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

According to the press secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, the Russian head of state decided to participate in the summit via video conference.

The BRICS summit in Johannesburg will be the largest gathering of leaders from the Global South in recent years. Leaders of 54 African states were invited.

The summit will begin with the opening of the Business Forum. The central part of the summit – a meeting of the leaders of the participating countries – is scheduled for August 23. Part of the meeting will be held in closed format.

On August 24, the leaders of the member countries of the association will hold meetings with heads of state and government invited through interaction with BRICS, and a general meeting will also be held.

Along with the leaders of African countries, 11 leaders of the countries of the Global South, representing such regional organizations as the Gulf Cooperation Council, G77, the Caribbean Community, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, were invited to these events.

BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Türkiye, Egypt, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Iran expressed their desire to join the economic bloc.

The BRICS presidency passed to South Africa from China at the beginning of this year. In 2024, the chairmanship will pass to Russia.
