The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained why the head of the French state, Emmanuel Macron, calls Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anne-Claire Legendre, Macron calls Putin mainly at the request of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

Legendre stated this in an interview.

Why is Macron calling Putin?

As the diplomat said, the French leader calls the Russian president mainly at Zelensky’s request and always in coordination with his allies.

To maintain a channel for dialogue, – explained a representative of the French Foreign Ministry.

According to her, now the time for negotiations has not yet come, the conversation is going on through weapons, but the moment will come when, given the support provided by the West, the Ukrainians will decide that the time has come for negotiations.

To achieve the return of its territorial integrity and sovereignty, – said Legendre, explaining why Paris considers it useful to maintain a channel for dialogue with Moscow.

The diplomat noted that Macron, at Zelensky’s request, discussed with Putin the situation with the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and that this made it possible to send observers from the IAEA to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

A spokeswoman for the French Foreign Ministry emphasized that the very fact that the communication channel remains open is important.

It is also important that we try to promote certain issues raised by the Ukrainian side – she added.

Answering the question about when the French President expects to call the Russian President again, the diplomat said that she did not know this and forwarded the question to the Elysee Palace.

Let us recall that since the beginning of the special operation in Ukraine, the French leader has repeatedly called Putin. According to Macron’s own calculations, the total duration of their conversations exceeded one hundred hours.
