Mars: here is the first sound ever recorded from the planet

34views

The mission to Mars with NASA’s Perseverance rover made us and makes us dream: listen to the first sound ever recorded on the Red Planet

When the rover Perseverance landed on Mars, it was also equipped with the first microphone to land on the planet’s surface. These sophisticated instruments help us not only listen to what is happening there, but also better understand how the red planet works. The microphone is not always on: it records for about three minutes every two days. Audio was recorded from the microphone on the side of the Rover Perseverance by NASA on February 20, 2021. The sound has been filtered to make the sound of the wind more audible. This is the first time a rover on Marte was equipped with a microphone.

More information on the mission

A key focus for Perseverance’s mission to the Red Planet is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will examine the planet’s geology and past climate, will pave the way for human exploration of the planet and will be the first mission to collect samples and then, in a subsequent mission in collaboration with ESA and NASA (Mars Sample Return), arrive on Earth.
