Mayor of Oiapoque (AP) is arrested on suspicion of buying votes

3views

The mayor of Oiapoque (AP) was arrested this Saturday (28) on suspicion of buying votes. Candidate for re-election, Breno Almeida (PP) was with three other people and almost R$100,000 in cash inside a car.

“They were caught with R$99,850 in cash, which would supposedly be used to buy votes in the city, aiming to interfere in the municipal elections that will take place in October 2024”, says the note released by the PF.

The agents approached the vehicle after Breno Almeida’s father registered a police report. Miguel Caetano, who is the former mayor of Oiapoque, claims to have been threatened by his son after declaring his vote for another candidate.

The mayor will be held accountable for an electoral crime. He and the other three involved were taken to the Federal Police station where they will be available to the courts.

A CNN tried to contact the current mayor’s defense, but received no response. The PP has not yet commented on the case.
