Ministry of Justice asks state governments to send firefighters to fight fires

The Ministry of Justice sent requests to state governments for each federative entity to send ten firefighters to help combat the fires affecting the Pantanal and the Amazon.

Goiás and São Paulo denied aid on the grounds that they also face intense fires in their territories.

A CNN had access to responses from 8 states to the ministry:

  • São Paulo and Goiás, which denied support,
  • Maranhão, Alagoas, Bahia, Paraíba, Piauí and Rio Grande de Sul, which confirmed the aid.

The letters were sent by the National Secretary of Public Security, Mario Sarrubbo. The documents stipulated the presentation of responses by this Sunday (15).

The request aims to comply with the determination of Minister Flávio Dino, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). After a hearing, .

Maranhão responded that it has already sent 31 soldiers to fight the fire. The state reinforces that, at this moment, it is unfeasible to increase the number of firefighters assigned, as “it also faces a high number of fire outbreaks, especially in the southern region of the state, where teams from the capital and adjacent municipalities were also mobilized to reinforce the staff in these most affected regions”, as stated in the response sent to the ministry.

The other states responded that they will send support as follows:

  • Rio Grande do Sul: ten military personnel
  • Bahia: ten soldiers
  • Piauí: ten soldiers
  • Paraíba: eight soldiers
  • Alagoas: six soldiers

Decisions in the STF

Dino determined, on September 10, the immediate call for more military firefighters to join the National Force and assist in fighting fires in the country.

According to the minister’s decision, the quantity would be fixed by the Ministry of Justice. Agents must come from states that are not directly affected by forest fires.

On Sunday (15), to combat fires and burning in the Amazon and Pantanal. In this modality, the release of resources is not limited by the fiscal framework and will not be computed for the purposes of calculating fiscal targets.
