Ministry of Justice recorded 3,000 electoral crimes in the first round

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) recorded around 3,000 electoral crimes last Sunday alone (6), the date of the first round of municipal elections. The number is part of a balance released by the ministry on Friday (11).

1,170 exit incidents were also recorded; 498 vote buying and electoral corruption; and 384 of irregular electoral propaganda.

In addition, the ministry also registered 269 cases of violation or attempted violation of voting secrecy and 83 incidents of .

The actions were part of Operation Elections 2024, coordinated by the Ministry of Justice, with the participation of teams from the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police and the National Force, as well as representatives from the state Public Security secretariats.

“The main objective of the integration between the forces was to monitor electoral crimes and other incidents as a way of guaranteeing security and the free exercise of democracy”, informed the ministry.

According to the MJSP, R$638,000 in cash were seized on the day of the first round. In addition, authorities arrested 536 people, including 23 candidates. The data also shows that 53 vehicles were seized for irregular transportation of voters.

The complete balance made by the ministry, with data from August 17th to October 6th, shows that, in total, 4,556 electoral crimes were registered. During this period, 576 people were arrested and R$22,700 were seized.

Second round

The second round of elections takes place on October 27th, in municipalities with more than 200 thousand voters in which no candidate reached an absolute majority of votes in the first round.

According to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), 51 Brazilian municipalities will have a second round, 15 of which are capitals: (SE), (PA), (MG), (MS), (MT), (PR), (CE), ( GO), (PB), (AM), (RN), (TO), (RS), (RO) and (SP).
