At the end of August, foreign impurities were found in a batch of the Moderna vaccine that arrived in Japan.
By the time the investigation began, the suspicious drugs had already been administered to almost 400 local residents. The manufacturing company named the cause of the incident, explaining everything as human error.
According to Reuters, the impurities turned out to be metal particles.
Substances got into the vaccine ampoule during packaging due to an error made by the packaging machine assemblers.
Some parts were installed incorrectly, which caused friction and the formation of metal shavings.
The impurities were discovered in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The particles reacted to the magnets and ended up being stainless steel.
The developers hastened to assure that even such a drug is absolutely safe for human health.
A total of five lots of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine were tested.
Of these, three were supplied to Japan, where authorities soon decided to suspend the use of 1.63 million doses of the vaccine.
