The Cabinet of Ministers of Moldova, at a meeting on March 6, approved the suspension of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.

The meeting was broadcast by the government press service on the social network Facebook (banned in Russia; owned by Meta, a recognized extremist company in the Russian Federation).

Suspension of the CFE Treaty by Moldova

Commenting on the government’s decision, State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense of Moldova Valeriu Mija said that it was made taking into account the significant change in circumstances since the signing of the CFE Treaty.

According to him, the agreement is suspended with the possibility of returning to its implementation.

The Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defense of Moldova added that 21 states suspended participation in the CFE Treaty.

The government’s decision must be approved by parliament and the president. It will come into force 150 days after the CFE Treaty parties receive the relevant notification.

The CFE Treaty was signed in November 1990 and adapted in 1997.

The countries of the North Atlantic Alliance did not ratify the adapted version, continuing to adhere to the 1990 provisions containing weapons standards based on the balance between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.

In May 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law denouncing the CFE Treaty. The country’s withdrawal from the treaty was completed in November.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that the blame for the cessation of the CFE Treaty will fall on the United States and its allies, who chose the path of confrontation.

Earlier it was reported that Poland would create drone troops.
