The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Rondônia recommended that the federal government’s Secretariat of Indigenous Health deliver protective masks to indigenous people and provide guidance on precautions against .

The secretariat is part of the Ministry of Health and has ten days to present a schedule with the measures that will be adopted to comply with the recommendation of the Federal Public Ministry (MPF).

Any failure by the government to comply with the MPF recommendation may result in administrative measures and legal action.

Attorney Caroline de Fátima Helpa states that Porto Velho is at the epicenter of the blanket of extreme air pollution, which represents “a true situation of public calamity”.

According to the prosecutor, the outlook for the entire month of September is for the situation to worsen given the forecast of an extension of the dry period combined with an increase in fires.

“The experts’ advice, in these cases, is to minimize or even avoid any type of activities in an open environment, in order to avoid exposure to pollution,” he said.

“Such exposure is almost inevitable in indigenous villages, given the cultural specificities of indigenous peoples in terms of their way of living and the construction of their houses”, says Caroline de Fátima Helpa.
