The migration crisis in Lithuania is getting worse. On Sunday, August 1, a record was set for the number of illegal immigrants detained at the border.
Yesterday, 287 people found themselves illegally on the territory of the Baltic country.
This is significantly more than the previous daily maximum.
We are talking about the situation on June 27th. Then the border guards of the Republic of Lithuania detained 171 migrants who crossed the border illegally.
Situation in Lithuania in 2021
According to data presented on the official website of the Lithuanian Department of Statistics, 3,832 illegal immigrants have been detained in the country this year.
This is a huge number. In previous years, the Baltic country has not faced such an influx of illegal migrants.
Most of those who arrived said they had left Iraq. There were 2555 such people.
Many illegal immigrants were previously residents of Congo (191 people), Cameroon (129), Syria (124), Iran (91) and other Asian and African countries.
So, last year Lithuanian border guards detained 81 people. Over the 7 months of this year, the number of detainees is already 47 times higher.
According to the Lithuanian side, almost all illegal immigrants are coming from Belarus in 2021.
