Orban said he would not allow the EU to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession

Hungary will not allow the European Union to begin negotiations on the admission of Ukraine.

This information was voiced by the head of the Hungarian government, Victor Obran, in an interview with the Mandiner portal.

Why Hungary will not allow negotiations to begin

As Orban explained in an interview, the state of Ukraine does not allow us to begin negotiations with it on membership in the European Union.

According to the Hungarian prime minister, the EU is about to make a terrible mistake.

Which must be prevented. Even if 26 EU countries want to do it, and only we will be against it, – said the head of the Hungarian government, noting that no one had calculated the consequences of Ukraine’s admission to the community.

According to him, Hungary offers to give Ukraine a signal of support, but this should not be EU membership.

Orban believes that the EU needs to conclude a strategic partnership agreement with Ukraine, which will set out exactly what kind of support the EU provides.

But let’s not confuse this with membership negotiations, – added the Prime Minister of Hungary.

He recalled that some European countries have been negotiating accession to the EU for many years.

Ukraine, according to Orban, jumped out from behind them, finding itself ahead for geopolitical reasons.

Yesterday, the head of the Austrian government, Karl Nehammer, also spoke out against the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s admission to the EU on current terms.

According to the Austrian Chancellor, preference should not be given to Ukraine over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On December 14-15, the EU summit will discuss the European Commission’s recommendation to begin negotiations on accession to the community for Ukraine, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The decision to start negotiations can only be made unanimously.

The Hungarian authorities consistently oppose this. The Hungarian Prime Minister proposed not to bring this issue up for discussion at the summit at all.

He also expressed the opinion that the possibility of Ukraine’s admission to the EU could be discussed in 5-10 years.

In addition, Hungary is now blocking another package of assistance to Ukraine from the European Peace Fund worth half a billion euros, as well as packages of macro-financial (50 billion euros) and military (20 billion euros) assistance for 2024-2027.

Previously, Hungary had to lift its veto on aid to Ukraine.
