The Federal Police (PF) will investigate the infection of patients with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to the Ministry of Justice, the PF will join the case.

The failure would have occurred in a laboratory responsible for virus detection tests. According to investigations, two donors had undergone a blood test at the PCS Lab laboratory, located in Baixada Fluminense, and the results were false negative. As a result, the recipients were infected.

The PCS Lab Saleme laboratory said this Friday (11) that it had installed an internal investigation to determine responsibilities.

In a statement, the company states that it will provide “medical and psychological support” to infected patients and their families and that it is available to the authorities to investigate the case.

The laboratory stated that the case is “an unprecedented episode in the history of the company, which has been operating in the market since 1969”.

According to the CNNthose infected are already aware and the organs of another 288 donors are undergoing new testing in the state.

The Ministry of Health requested the precautionary closure of the PCS Lab Saleme laboratory following the complaints. In addition to the ban, the ministry ordered that all organ donor tests be carried out exclusively by Hemorio using the NAT test and ordered the retesting of donor material from the laboratory under investigation.

The ministry also determined that the group of patients receiving organ transplants from infected donors, as well as their contacts, receive full specialized care.
