Poland and the Baltic states are planning to create a “defense line” on the border with the Russian Federation and Belarus

Poland and the Baltic countries – Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia – have decided to create a “defense line” on the border with Russia and Belarus.

To implement the project, they turned to the EU authorities with a request to provide funding for it, arguing that this was in the interests of the entire EU.

Reuters reports this with reference to a letter sent by the leaders of these countries to Belgium, which presides over the EU Council.

In the letter, which was published by the TASS media outlet, the initiators of the project ask for money for protection.

It, in their opinion, is necessary against the alleged “military threat and harmful actions” emanating, as the Poles and Balts believe, from Minsk and Moscow.

The construction of a defense infrastructure system along the EU’s external border with Russia and Belarus will urgently help secure the EU from military and hybrid threats, the letter says.

It also states that the “political and financial efforts” of the European Union are necessary to implement the project.

The authors of the idea of a “defense line” insist: it must be implemented in coordination with NATO and in accordance with the military requirements of the Alliance.

Reuters was able to talk about this topic with representatives of diplomatic circles.

They say that the construction of a 700-kilometer “defense line” will require at least 2.5 billion euros.

The request of Poland and the Baltic countries for the construction of a defensive line and financing of related work is planned to be discussed at the EU summit on June 27-28.

Earlier, the Polish Ministry of Defense reported that the border with Belarus can be crossed in 25 seconds.
