Policeman sentenced to 22 years for murder of George Floyd

0views

In the American city of Minneapolis (Minnesota), former police officer Derek Chauvin was tried.

This is the same man accused of killing African-American George Floyd.

The court found Chauvin guilty and sentenced him to 22.5 years in prison, according to online sources citing US television channels that broadcast the trial.

Judge Peter Cahill said the verdict was based on public opinion, not emotion or sympathy. He expressed condolences to the relatives of the murdered man.

He explained to the condemned man that he was punishing him with imprisonment for a term of 10 years longer than what is usually given for committing such crimes (150 months).

The decision is based on your abuse of power and trust, and the particular brutality you demonstrated against George Floyd,” the judge said.

Chauvin can only apply for parole after 15 years.

By the way. The prosecution requested 30 years in prison for the former policeman.

In turn, Derek Chauvin expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, but did not apologize.
