Politico: The Pentagon wants to fight Russian and Chinese hypersonic weapons with balloons

48views

The US Department of Defense is developing a new plan to counter hypersonic weapons from Russia and China.

The basis of the plan will be balloons.

An American publication reported this on July 5.

What plan is the Pentagon developing?

According to the publication, the Pentagon plans to use balloons as part of an extensive surveillance system, and in the future as a means of detecting Russian and Chinese hypersonic missiles.

The balloons will be located in the stratosphere and will replace more expensive satellites in terms of functionality.

The idea may sound like science fiction, but DoD budget documents indicate that the technology is moving from the Pentagon’s science sector to military service.Politico reports.

It is noted that about $3.8 million has been spent on this project over the past 2 years and that an additional $27.1 million is planned for fiscal year 2023.
