The leader of the PT bench in the Chamber, Odair Cunha (MG), decided to bring forward the debate on the possible support for the candidacy of deputy Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB) for the presidency of the House after Elmar Nascimento (União-BA) intensified negotiations to also run for office.
Party sources reported to CNN that the intention was to make public the discussion about a name to be supported by the PT bench only at the end of the municipal elections.
Agreement
However, the movement was anticipated after an agreement signed between Antonio Brito (PSD-BA) and Elmar Nascimento (União-BA) to maintain their candidacies and thus stand up to the name of Hugo Motta. Elmar even met with Lula this Wednesday (11) to talk about the issue.
In light of the movement, Cunha published, on social media, that the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), informed this Wednesday, during a lunch with party leaders, that he will support Motta.
However, until the beginning of the evening, Lira had not yet officially commented on who she will support to succeed him.
“It is not appropriate to debate the issue of government versus opposition, but only to guarantee the choice of a name that ensures the harmonious and independent functioning of the Legislative Branch. As leader of the Workers’ Party in the Chamber of Deputies, I will submit Hugo Motta’s name to the group of parliamentarians on the bench so that it can be evaluated in the House’s succession process”, said the PT leader.
Meeting
This Tuesday (9), members of the PT bench who are in Brasília met to debate the issue.
Motta has preference, but still faces resistance from PT members who consider the parliamentarian more aligned with the center-right and Bolsonarist agendas.
The deputy from Paraíba also tries to articulate the support of the PL – the party with the largest bench in the house, with 92 deputies – for his candidacy.
