The presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, discussed the situation in Ukraine in a telephone conversation on January 5.
The heads of state also discussed trade and economic cooperation and the Syrian settlement.

What issues were discussed
It is reported that the presidents discussed the expansion of trade and economic cooperation, primarily in the energy sector, the implementation of strategic joint projects, in particular, the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant and the creation of a gas hub in Turkey.
During the discussion of the situation around Ukraine, Putin emphasized the destructive role of Western countries pumping Ukraine with weapons and providing operational information and target designation.
In light of the readiness indicated by the Turkish President for mediation in a political settlement of the conflict, the Russian President reaffirmed that Russia is open to serious dialogue, provided that Kiev takes into account new territorial realities and fulfills repeatedly voiced demands.
When discussing the Istanbul grain deal, the need for a conscientious and comprehensive approach was emphasized, including the removal of barriers to Russian exports.
Discussing the prospects for a Syrian settlement, the heads of state positively assessed the meeting of defense ministers held in Moscow last December with the participation of the leadership of the intelligence services of Russia, Turkey and Syria.
The hope was expressed that the development of contacts in a trilateral format will contribute to improving the situation in Syria, restoring the territorial integrity of the country, solving the problem of refugees and the tasks of combating international terrorism.
Putin and Erdogan also exchanged congratulations on the occasion of the New Year and agreed to continue contacts at different levels.
