Rich people don’t need the government and city hall, says Lula during an event in Fortaleza

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Friday (11) that the rich do not need the government and that the poorest are only remembered at election time.

The PT member made the statement at an event to hand over the Minha Casa, Minha Vida housing units in Fortaleza (CE), a city in which the second round of municipal elections will be contested between André Fernandes (PL) and Evandro Leitão (PT).

“It has to be a government to take care of the people and take care of those who need it most. Because the rich don’t need the State, the government, the city hall. He already lives well, his street already has asphalt, he already has running water, sewage, he already has a lot of things, he has a shopping center, he has a cinema… and the poor man, what do he have? Nothing,” said Lula.

“The poor are only remembered at election time. At election time, the poor are the most beloved people in the world. Everyone kisses, hugs, caresses. When the election ends, he turns his back on the poor again and takes care of having lunch and dinner with the rich, bankers and businessmen”, added the president.

Second round

In Fortaleza, a survey carried out by the Paraná Pesquisas institute, between the 7th and 10th of October, indicated that the candidates appear technically tied in the dispute for Mayor of the capital. Fernandes has 48.1%. Next, Leitão appears with 43.0%.

The second round is scheduled for October 27th. In the country, Brazilians from 52 cities must return to the polls, including 15 capitals.

My Home, My Life

Lula participated in the handover ceremony for 1,296 apartments in the Cidade Jardim I Módulo IV project, in Conjunto José Walter.

According to the government, the total value of the investment is R$115.7 million, with R$100.5 million from the Residential Lease Fund (FAR) and R$15.2 million from the government of Ceará.

The development includes a library with more than 500 books, as well as a computing area and a “free zone” that has a space for children.

“This free zone, this library is the minimum amount of respect that governments must show towards the most needy people in this country. (…) It is entirely possible for every housing complex to not only have four walls for people to live in, but also to have an area for leisure and comfort,” stated the president.
