A new Public Security River Base was installed to help combat crimes, such as drug trafficking and biopiracy, in the Amazon region of Pará.

The structure, called Candiru, was launched this Friday (13) by the governor of Pará Helder Barbalho. The inspection system also has two boats, one of which is armored.

Strategic region

The equipment was assembled in the municipality of Óbidos in the north of the state. The city borders Suriname and is crossed by the Amazon River, which makes it the route for several vessels.

The region, known as the Amazon Gorge, is strategic for combating international drug trafficking, environmental crimes and biopiracy, in addition to being the target of fiscal and health teams.

Investments

The cost to put the base into operation was R$8.2 million from the state government.

For the speedboats, the value was R$2.7 million – 2.2 million for the armored vehicle and R$560 thousand for the other.

Both are adapted for tactical actions by military, civil and federal police. The one with shielding technology also has night vision and a thermal camera, which identifies objects and people through temperature.

River security complex

This is the second base of its kind to come into operation in Pará.

The first was installed in Breves, to serve the river area of the Marajó archipelago. The third is under construction and will be in Abaetetuba.
