Rzeczpospolita: Brussels may limit the right of veto for Ukraine’s accession to the EU

The European Union may limit the veto power of member countries so that new countries, including Ukraine, can join the community.

The Polish publication Rzeczpospolita writes about this.

Why should the European Union limit its veto power?

According to Rzeczpospolita, France, Germany and other EU countries are setting the community’s expansion as a condition for its reform, in particular, limiting the right of veto when the EU Council makes decisions on foreign policy and financial issues.

Limiting the right of veto, the article explains, is necessary in order to prevent one or more small states from blocking strategic decisions and reducing the geopolitical weight of the EU.

The publication notes that Poland does not agree with limiting the right of veto, which will not only partially lose its sovereignty, but will also face economic problems if Ukraine is admitted to the EU.

Rzeczpospolita reminds that Ukraine, like Poland, is a large producer of agricultural products.

And since the production of Ukrainian agricultural products, the publication explains, is much cheaper than Polish ones, Ukraine can become a serious competitor to Poland in the EU market.

“Grain conflict” is just a prelude, – summarizes.

Why did tension arise between Poland and Ukraine?

Relations between Poland and Ukraine became complicated after the European Commission lifted the embargo on the supply of agricultural products from Ukraine to neighboring EU countries in mid-September.

Poland, Hungary and Slovakia then extended the ban unilaterally.

After this, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine Taras Kachka threatened Poland with an embargo on its agricultural products. The head of the Polish government, Mateusz Morawiecki, responded by threatening to expand the list of Ukrainian products prohibited for import.

The day before, the European Commission recommended starting negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland Pavel Jablonski said that Ukraine will not join the EU until the remains of the victims of the Volyn massacre are exhumed.
