German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz accepted the resignation of Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht.

This information was announced by German government representative Christiane Hofmann at a briefing on January 16.

How Scholz accepted Lambrecht’s resignation

When asked whether the chancellor accepted the minister’s resignation, a spokeswoman for the German government responded in the affirmative, noting that Scholz respects Lambrecht’s decision and is grateful to her for her good work during this difficult and challenging time.

According to Hofmann, the candidacy of a successor will be presented to the country’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in the near future.

A representative of the German defense department, who was present at the briefing, clarified that Lambrecht will continue to serve as minister until he receives a letter of dismissal from the hands of the head of state. When this will happen is still unknown.

Why Lambrecht resigned

As previously reported, Lambrecht resigned due to the fact that media attention to her person pushed discussions about the needs of the army into the background.

In recent months, Lambrecht has often been criticized in the media for not providing enough support for the Bundeswehr.

The latest reason for criticism was the minister’s New Year’s video message. The media found some of Lambrecht’s language inappropriate.
