Scholz called aid to Ukraine a financial challenge for Germany

German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz called assistance to Ukraine a financial challenge for Germany.

The German Chancellor made this statement on December 9 at the SPD congress.

What Scholz said about supporting Ukraine

As reported, Scholz said that providing assistance to Ukraine is a big financial challenge for Germany, but will definitely continue.

The German Chancellor noted that at meetings with citizens he was asked whether it was worth introducing anti-Russian sanctions and supplying weapons to Ukraine.

My answer is yes, said the head of the German government.

According to him, Europe and the whole world should send a signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin that support for Ukraine will continue.

He should not expect us to slow down our efforts – Scholz explained.

He warned that the conflict in Ukraine will not end as quickly as we would like.

Therefore, according to the German Chancellor, Germany should be able to contribute even more if others become weaker.

We should be able to continue doing what we do this year, next year and the year after that, – he said, emphasizing the need to make decisions that will allow Germany to be able to help Ukraine.

Since February last year, the total volume of financial, military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine from Germany has exceeded 25 billion euros.

In November it was reported that Berlin intends to increase aid to Ukraine in 2024 from 4 to 8 billion euros. However, Germany’s budget for next year has not yet been agreed upon.

The cause of the budget crisis in Germany was the ban by the Constitutional Court to spend 60 billion euros on environmental and climate projects.

Initially, these 60 billion euros were pledged to combat the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, but at the end of 2021 the Scholz government redistributed them into a new fund. Almost two years later, the Constitutional Court declared this decision unconstitutional.
