German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz confirmed the appointment of his SPD comrade Boris Pistorius as Minister of Defense.
The German Chancellor published a corresponding statement on Twitter on January 17.
Scholz’s statement
The head of the German government called Pistorius an outstanding politician with a big heart and exactly the person the army needs now.
Scholz noted the new minister’s extensive political experience, competence and assertiveness.
I am pleased that the new Minister of Defense will be the outstanding politician Boris Pistorius, – said the German Chancellor.
Before his appointment as head of the Ministry of Defense, Pistorius headed the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the federal state of Lower Saxony.
According to German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit, on January 19, Pistorius will receive a certificate of appointment from the country’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and take the oath of office in the Bundestag.
As defense minister, Pistorius will replace Christina Lambrecht, who resigned the day before due to excessive press attention to her person.
In recent months, Lambrecht has been repeatedly criticized not only in the media, but also by coalition partners.
