Scholz confused Sweden with Ukraine when talking about NATO expansion

German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz confused Sweden with Ukraine when talking about the expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance.

A curious incident occurred at Scholz’s press conference in Berlin.

Reports this.

What Scholz said

Journalists asked the German Chancellor a question about Sweden’s future place in NATO.

The head of the German government made a mistake and confused Sweden with.

I support Ukraine’s entry into NATO, that is, Sweden’s entry into NATO, Scholz said.

The German Chancellor’s reservation caused laughter in the audience.

Let us remind you that on Monday at the summit in Vilnius, under the patronage of Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, a meeting took place between the head of the Swedish government, Ulf Kristersson, and the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. At the meeting, it was agreed that Türkiye would begin ratifying Sweden’s application to NATO.

The application states that over the past year Sweden has significantly strengthened the fight against terrorist manifestations in the activities of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), resumed military exports to Turkey and made the necessary changes to legislation. These goals were outlined at last year’s NATO summit in Madrid.

As for Ukraine, following the Vilnius summit it did not receive a concrete proposal for NATO membership.

Instead, according to Stoltenberg, three steps were taken towards Ukraine: the Ukraine-NATO Council was created, the NATO Membership Action Plan was canceled, and a multi-year military assistance program for Ukraine was approved.

In the final statement of the summit, announced by Stoltenberg, it was said that an invitation to Ukraine would be sent after an agreement was reached between the allies, when all conditions were met.
