Scientists have assessed the likelihood of an epidemic of the deadly Nipah virus

0views

The Indian Nipah virus, which poses a mortal danger to human health, has seriously worried scientists.

Experts tried to find out whether humanity is facing a new epidemic, which, in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, could be triggered by a disease identified in India.

To date, symptoms of the disease caused by the virus have been confirmed in 11 people in the Indian state of Kerala.

All of them had previously been in contact with a 12-year-old boy who died from the Nipah virus. The state is under quarantine, and the deceased child’s full circle of contacts includes 251 people.

Having assessed the situation, scientists came to the conclusion that a possible outbreak of the disease in India is not capable of triggering an epidemic comparable to the scale of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

It has been established that the virus spreads quite quickly, its mortality rate is at the level of 40-75%.

However, Nipah, unlike SARS-CoV-2, lacks those features that lead to an epidemic or pandemic.

According to WHO, the new Indian virus is classified as the most dangerous in the world. There is currently no cure for it.

Those infected are diagnosed with fever, mental health problems, weakness, headache and muscle pain, cough and difficulty breathing, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea.

The chances of recovery from infection are 25-45%.

The virus spreads through unwashed fruits and food. It is recommended to avoid all contact with carriers of the virus.
