Scientists have discovered the reason for the origin of giant “death zones” in the world’s oceans

Employees of the University of California have named the reason for the origin of giant “death zones” in the abyss of the World Ocean.

The key to the solution was the analysis of bottom sediments of the Bering Sea. American scientists collected rock that settled at depth over 1.2 million years.

It turned out that the impetus for this process was global warming. Because of this, “death zones” began to form in the northern regions of the Pacific Ocean.

This environment is characterized by low oxygen levels, reports the journal Science Advances.

Researchers believe that such zones threaten the destruction of the existing ecosystem.

It will all start with the destruction of the food sources of the inhabitants of the deep sea, and further along the chain.

As it turned out, similar processes have already occurred in the past. Scientists found confirmation of this by analyzing the composition of sediments extracted from the bottom of cores.

It was possible to obtain samples of underwater soil, preserved almost untouched, in oxygen-free zones.

The fact is that in such zones there are no living organisms that disturb the structure of bottom sediments.

According to the conclusion, this process could well be activated by the climate that has established itself on Earth now.

Researchers intend to find out what limits “dead zones” in the Pacific Ocean can reach.
