Scientists have uncovered the mystery of the pagan burial of a girl with finches in Poland

9views

In Poland, scientists continue to work on the mysterious discovery. We are talking about the so-called. “the tomb of a stranger.”

Polish archaeologists have discovered the burial of a child. The burial took place about 360 years ago. The ritual that was observed during the burial of the child is still unknown to science.

During excavations, the grave of a 12-year-old girl was discovered. Scientists were completely baffled by the finches’ skulls discovered during the burial.

The German scientific publication Praehistorische Zeitschrift responded to the discovery.

Strange funeral

The tomb was discovered during excavations of the chambers of the Great Tunnel cave, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, near the town of Ojcowa.

Scientists found a finch skull in the buried girl’s mouth. Another bird skull was located in the cheek area of the child’s skull.

Christianity and paganism

So far, only partially similar descriptions of similar rituals have been discovered. It is noteworthy that the burial dates back to the time of the active spread of Christianity.

This is what prompted scientists to solve the mystery. At that time, Christianity was not yet so actively practiced in Scandinavia. Therefore, pagan rituals were actively used there.

It was believed that birds were related to the exodus of the soul to the afterlife. But at the same time, not a single similar burial was discovered in Scandinavia itself.

Years of analysis

Archaeologists had to work like in a detective story. Genetic analysis helped establish that the child still had Scandinavian roots, and the girl ended up in Poland with the Swedish troops. The deceased had no relation to the Slavs and may have been from modern Finland.

It was also not possible to establish the cause of death, but it is known that during life the child often went hungry.
