Senior Guinean military officials killed in Liberia plane crash

A plane carrying representatives of the Guinean Defense Ministry crashed in Liberia, Guinean armed forces spokesman Alpha Barry said on February 11.

In particular, the chief of staff of the army, Kelefa Diallo, died in the plane crash.

An aircraft with high-ranking military officials on board crashed 40 kilometers from the capital of Liberia, the city of Monrovia.

According to a representative of the Guinean armed forces, there were from 12 to 18 employees of the country’s Ministry of Defense and two pilots on board the ill-fated airliner.

According to preliminary information, over 10 passengers were killed.

The Guinean delegation was traveling by plane to Liberia to participate in the celebration of the armed forces of that country. Liberian Defense Minister Brownie Samukai said an investigation into the cause of the crash was underway. And Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf declared Tuesday, February 12, a day of mourning throughout the country.

As the media note, the deceased Chief of the General Staff of the Guinean Armed Forces, Kelefa Diallo, was a close associate of the country’s president, Alpha Conde.
