Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will leave his post and resign due to protests. The corresponding decision was made at the last meeting of party leaders.

According to the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, Mahinda Yapu Abeywardene, the departure date is July 13.

The latest events in the political life of the state are reported by the local publication Adaderana.

After massive protests broke out across the country, party leaders demanded Gotabaya Rajapaksa resign. On July 13, the current leader must resign as head of state.

Protests in Sri Lanka

The protests began the day before. A peaceful protest march was planned for Saturday.

However, the demonstrators broke through the barriers and stormed the presidential palace, which by that time had been evacuated.

According to some reports, Rajapaksa left the country and flew away by plane.

During the riots, at least 40 people were injured, as well as two police officers.

It is also reported that in addition to the president, the prime minister will resign, and until a new leader is chosen, the speaker of parliament will act as head of state.

Crisis in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948, and today the country’s economy is in a deplorable state.

The cause of the plight was the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the imposed lockdowns, the country lost its main source of foreign currency – tourism.

As a result, the authorities were unable to purchase the required amount of fuel, which led to a shortage of food, medicine, gas and other essential items, and power outages also began.
