State of emergency and emergency evacuation. A volcano erupts in Iceland

32views

A powerful volcanic eruption began on the Reykjanes Peninsula, in the south of Iceland.

According to eyewitnesses, the lava approached the nearby town of Grindavik to a distance of up to half a kilometer.

Earlier, authorities evacuated all residents from this locality and declared a state of emergency.

MIA Rossiya Segodnya reported this with reference to the RUV television company, which clarified that the eruption is occurring north of Grindavik.

Experts say that the crack that has opened in the ground is expanding.

Emergency services sent helicopters to the region to find out the exact location where the volcano was erupting.

On-site specialists in helicopters will have to assess the degree of danger of the phenomenon.

However, civil defense has already raised the internal regime from the level of danger to an emergency.

As for the residents of Grindavik, according to available information, they were evacuated last night.

The TV channel draws attention: the empty city is partially without power.

Earlier in Iceland – in the same region – another volcano occurred after an earthquake. Also near the town of Grindavik.
