It is also the birthday of NATO, the Washington Treaty was signed on April 4, 1949reminded the head of the organization.

Stoltenberg noted that Finland’s accession to NATO will make the country safer and the alliance stronger.

Finland’s path to NATO

Finland and Sweden submitted applications to join the alliance in May last year, but Turkey blocked the accession process, demanding that Kurdish organizations be declared terrorist and the extradition of those accused of terrorism and participation in the 2016 coup attempt.

To resolve these issues, Finland, Sweden and Türkiye signed a memorandum.

On March 27, Finland’s entry into the alliance was ratified by Hungary, and on March 30 by Türkiye.

Sweden’s entry was delayed due to complications in relations with Ankara after the burning of the Koran in Stockholm.
