Successions in Congress: PL must avoid its own candidacy to avoid repeating 2023

31views

The isolation of the PL at the beginning of 2023 and the subsequent lack of space at the House Table means that party leaders today are cautious about their own candidacies in the internal elections of Congress next year.

At the time, Marinho lost to Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) and the largest opposition party was still left without a position on the House Board – responsible for directing legislative work – due to negotiations between the parties that supported the current president of the Senate.

The PL was also left without command of permanent Senate committees. PP and Republicans, who supported Marinho at the time, were left in the same situation. Months later, after a lot of pressure, committees were created to be led by PL senators.

The episode was considered a severe blow to the opposition and is remembered today by members of the PL when it comes to the elections for the presidencies of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, scheduled for February 2025. They do not want it to happen again.

Although there are around five months to go and our own candidacies have not been officially discarded, coordination has already begun and the idea is to collaborate as much as possible with other parties. So far, the PL tends to support the names that emerge as favorites in the disputes.

In the Senate, a possibility, clear favorite.

In the Chamber, succession is concentrated between and .

In any case, the PL bench must wait for who the current president of the House, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), will support and have new conversations with the former president of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as well as with the national president of the party , Valdemar Costa Neto.
