Sweden, which has joined the North Atlantic Alliance, does not want to host permanent NATO military bases and nuclear weapons.

This was stated by Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström in an interview with the Turkish news agency Anadolu.

What the head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry said about the deployment of NATO bases and nuclear weapons in the country

The minister said that Sweden does not want to host permanent NATO bases and sees no reason for the deployment of nuclear weapons.

According to the head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry, Sweden will follow the path of Denmark and Norway in this matter.

Only three NATO countries – the USA, England and France – have nuclear weapons, – he said in an interview, recalling that since the end of the Cold War, nuclear weapons have not been deployed in any of the other NATO countries.

Billström emphasized that no member of the alliance is obliged to host nuclear weapons against their will.

I think this question is somewhat exaggerated. We joined NATO without any preconditions on this issue, – summed up the head of Swedish diplomacy.

The day before, the head of the Swedish government, Ulf Kristersson, made a similar statement.

On March 7, the protocol on Sweden’s accession to NATO came into force, and the country became the 32nd member of the alliance.

Yesterday, a solemn ceremony of raising the Swedish flag took place at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Sweden and Finland have applied to join NATO in May 2022.

Finland joined the alliance on April 4 last year. The Swedish application was blocked for a long time by Hungary and Türkiye.

Earlier, the Finns went on a two-week strike.
