Taiwan chief executive election: island independence supporter wins

40views

On Saturday, January 13, Taiwan held elections for the head of the island’s administration.

The voting results have become known.

According to Taiwan’s Central Election Commission, Lai Qingde won: 40.05 percent of people who came to the polling stations voted for him.

The politician heads the Democratic Progressive Party and advocates for the independence of the island.

To win, Qingde did not need to get more than 50 percent of the votes: a relative majority was enough, since a second round is not scheduled.

Detailed voting results

Lai Qingde, Taiwan’s current deputy chief executive, received more than 5.5 million votes.

Hou Yi, who advocates for dialogue with Beijing to be restored, came in second. 4.6 million people voted for him.

Next comes Ko Wenzhe, who also expresses readiness for negotiations with mainland China (but subject to the current situation in Taiwan): almost 3.7 million residents of the island voted for this politician.

Both opposition candidates admitted defeat, – reports MIA “”.

It was previously said that Saturday’s elections in Taiwan were a choice between “war and peace” and between “prosperity and decline.”
