“That would be a good development.” The White House about Xi Jinping’s conversation with Zelensky

The White House is calling on Chinese leader Xi Jinping to make direct contact with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky.

Assistant to the US President for National Security Jake Sullivan notified the general public about this.

Thus, he commented on the information that appeared in the media about a possible call from the Chairman of the People’s Republic of China to the President of Ukraine.

US position

Washington is interested in contacts between Xi Jinping and Vladimir Zelensky, believing that Beijing should hear directly from Kyiv its “opinion on the crisis,” and not just from Moscow.

Therefore, we actually convinced Beijing to allow such contact to take place. We did this both publicly and privately,” Sullivan TASS agency.

At the same time, he noted that the White House cannot now confirm The Wall Street Journal’s information on this topic.

Let us recall that the newspaper reported that Xi Jinping plans to visit Moscow next week to meet with Vladimir Putin, after which he wants to hold online negotiations with the President of Ukraine.

“Good development”

According to adviser Joe Biden, representatives of Kyiv told the American side that they had not yet received confirmation that “a telephone call or video conference will take place.”

However, the United States hopes that contact between the Ukrainian and Chinese leaders will still occur.

“That would be a good development,” Sullivan said, explaining that such contact would help Beijing “balance its views” on the Ukraine crisis.

In addition, the White House representative added, Washington hopes that a potential dialogue between Zelensky and Xi Jinping could convince the Chinese authorities to abandon the possible supply of weapons to Russia for use in the Northeast Military District.
