The Armenian Parliament ratified the Rome Statute of the ICC: voting results

On October 3, at a meeting of the Armenian parliament in Yerevan, the treaty establishing the International Criminal Court was ratified.

Based on the voting results, parliamentarians voted by a majority to recognize the document.

60 deputies voted for the ratification of the Rome Statute of the ICC and the adoption of a statement on retroactive recognition of the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, 22 were against, MIA publishes the voting results with reference to the Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan.

The opposition faction “Armenia” voted against the adoption of the document, calling the ratification of the ICC statute an unconstitutional procedure.

Representatives of the Republican Party said that voting on this initiative could lead to unpredictable consequences.

Further decisions rest with the President of the Republic. Once signed, the document will come into force within 60 days.

Who recognizes the ICC

Western countries recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC.

Russia and Belarus, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United States do not recognize the organization’s decision.

Why does Yerevan need the ICC?

According to Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan, ratification of the ICC statute was required in order to ensure the security of the country.

According to the prime minister, the influence of the CSTO, as well as the Armenian-Russian partnership, is not enough in this regard.

The procedure, according to Pashinyan, is beneficial for Armenia.
