The leaders of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) agreed on a document establishing the parameters for expanding the community.

This information was announced on August 23 by South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor.

What document did the BRICS leaders agree on?

According to the head of the South African Foreign Ministry, today at the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, agreement was reached on the issue of expanding the association.

According to her, the leaders of the BRICS countries approved a document defining the principles for admitting new members to the community.

Pandor added that the leaders will speak in more detail about the expansion of BRICS at the close of the summit.

This is a very positive development. It’s surprising that so many countries want to join BRICS, – said the head of the South African Foreign Ministry in an interview with a local radio station.

According to Pandor, this shows the special role of BRICS in the world.

Since January, the Sherpas of the BRICS countries have been working on the concept of community expansion and the principles for its implementation.

22 states submitted formal applications to join the association: Belarus, Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Venezuela, Indonesia, Honduras, Iran, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Thailand , State of Palestine and Senegal.

On the sidelines of the summit there is information that the prospect of membership will be open to three to five countries. Among them are the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Argentina.
