The Chinese Foreign Ministry called Stoltenberg’s words about the defensive nature of NATO “the joke of the century”

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs laughed at the statement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg about the defensive nature of NATO.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian called this statement by the NATO Secretary General “the joke of the century.”

The Chinese diplomat wrote about this on Twitter.

Lijian tweeted a collage of Stoltenberg’s statement about NATO’s defensive nature and footage of explosions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Yugoslavia – countries where the alliance has conducted military operations.

The collage also says: “Bombs are a symbol of NATO’s defensive nature.”

Stoltenberg has called NATO a defensive alliance more than once, most recently in the context of events in Ukraine, emphasizing that the alliance is not a party to the conflict.
