The Estonian government led by Kaja Kallas resigned on July 15.

This was reported by the Estonian state television and radio portal ERR.

Why does the Kallas government resign?

According to ERR, Callas’ resignation is related to her appointment as the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Technically, Callas will continue to head the cabinet until the new government is sworn in.

Today she personally met with the head of state, Alar Karis, and submitted her resignation. Later, Callas will also resign as chairman of the Reform Party.

According to ERR, members of the ruling coalition, which includes the Reform Party, Eesti 200 and SDE, are holding negotiations to preserve it.

Karis will also hold talks with the parties, after which he will distribute responsibilities for forming a new cabinet, which is likely to take office in early August.

Kallas has headed the Estonian government since January 2021. At the end of June, the European Council appointed her head of the EU foreign policy service.
