The EU Court sentenced Poland to a huge daily fine: what caused it

25views

The Court of Justice of the European Union ordered Poland to pay a fine of half a million euros every day.

The legal dispute is related to the Turov mine, in which the Polish side is engaged in coal mining.

The claim was filed by the Czech Republic: the enterprise is located near the border with this particular state.

The plaintiff’s demand was to stop mining operations due to environmental damage affecting certain cities in the Czech Republic.

As a result, the court sided with Prague and ordered Warsaw to stop the above-described activities, foreign news agencies report.

However, Poland refused to comply with the court’s decision, explaining that it did not want to jeopardize its energy security.

The fact is that the coal mined at the Turov mine helps provide heat to several Polish settlements at once.

As a result, it was decided to impose a fine on Poland. Every day the country will have to pay 500 thousand euros.

The decision will remain in force until the Polish side stops mining at the disputed site.
