On March 14, the European Parliament adopted a resolution demanding that the Russian Federation return its gold reserves to Romania.

The resolution was published on the website of the European Parliament.

How the EP demanded that Russia return gold to Romania

The resolution states that the EP urges the Russian Federation to return its national heritage to Romania.

According to the EP, Russia did not return to Romania state gold reserves, archival, cultural and religious values transferred to Moscow for safekeeping in 1916-1917, thereby violating international law.

The EP also appealed to the foreign policy service of the European Union and the European Commission to include the return of Romania’s national heritage on the diplomatic agenda in relations with the Russian Federation as soon as the situation in the region allows.

During the First World War, the Romanian authorities exported gold reserves, cultural objects and archives to Russia.

In 1935 and 1956, some of the valuables were returned. In 2003, Russia and Romania created a commission on issues related, among other things, to Romanian gold.

Previously, the EP law criminalized circumvention of EU sanctions.
