The European Union has learned the names of its leaders for the next five years

The leaders of the European Union countries, as well as their heads of government, approved appointments to key EU leadership positions for the next five years.

The outgoing head of the European Council, Charles Michel, notified Europeans of this on his page on one of the social networks.

He made a corresponding statement following the results of the recent EU summit in Brussels, TASS agency.

Mr. Michel, in particular, notified that Ursula von der Leyen had been re-elected to the post of President of the European Commission.

Charles himself was replaced as head of the European Council by the former Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa.

The head of the Estonian government, Kaja Kallas, was elected High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (previously, this position was held by Josep Borrell).

There remains one more formal procedure. In July, at the plenary session, the European Parliament will have to vote for the candidates appointed by the European Council.

As soon as this happens, the decisions made will take effect.

So, Callas may begin his duties in October, and Costa in December.

Even earlier, in September, von der Leyen will be able to present the new composition of the European Commission.
