The European Union is on the verge of a serious crisis because of Ukraine – Politico

The European Union has reached a dangerous point – it may face a very serious political crisis as early as December.

Such a threat looms over Brussels because of its assistance to Ukraine and Hungary’s position on this issue.

The corresponding statement was published by the Politico newspaper, citing anonymous sources from EU governing structures.

A crisis is coming

According to the publication, the brewing crisis could fully erupt at the summit of EU leaders in mid-December.

At this event, they want to “make a historic decision” to include Kyiv in the “club of 27 nations,” an excerpt from the material of the MIA Rossiya Segodnya newspaper.

The same article states that the summit is expected to approve a budget agreement:

to throw a €50 billion lifeline to Kyiv’s convulsing war economy.

Orban

However, the article goes on to say, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban gave his EU colleagues a “severe headache.”

He said that Budapest is against discussing the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union at the summit.

Orban emphasizes: Brussels must first develop a new strategy on the situation with the Russian-Ukrainian confrontation.

Only then, says the head of the Hungarian government, can the EU provide financial assistance to Kyiv.

The newspaper also learned that European politicians are worried that, in their opinion, the Hungarian prime minister could “take the EU hostage,” since all important decisions in the European Union must be made unanimously.

We are facing a serious crisis,” one European official complained to Politico.

Shadow of Veto

Diplomats are actively seeking ways to avoid a Hungarian veto at the upcoming summit.

Three sources of the newspaper immediately stated that the mentioned 50 billion euros could be provided to Ukraine not in a single tranche, but in parts – in the period from 2024 to 2027.

Disputes in the EU are also ongoing on the issue of military assistance, since Brussels can transfer weapons to Ukraine only within the framework of bilateral agreements, but not through its structures.

However, such an approach, officials say, could reduce the significance of the EU’s role in arms supplies.

This is an admission of impotence that is difficult to swallow and which is detrimental to EU unity in relation to Kyiv, the author of the article came to this conclusion.
